The Best Murmuration Locations in the UK and Ireland
OK, ok, we say 'best' locations but what constitutes the best murmuration sites? is it numbers of Starlings that come to roost? Is it a site where they flock to year after year? Does the location have to add to the photos and videos you take as the thousands of Starlings swirls around in the sky before the seemingly fall in to their roost site? For us it could be a number of those reasons but another would be the proximity of where you live and whatever the numbers of Starlings even having a site where the starling numbers are small, this can still bring pleasure without having to travel miles to see them.
There are quite a few 'lists' of murmuration locations out there on various websites but most were done a few years ago and have not been updated since.
For instance, Gretna Green used to be a huge roost site for many years but we know that the Starlings moved to Metal Bridge and the numbers are nowhere near what they used to be. A couple show Westhay in Somerset as a roost location too but since doing this website etc, the Starlings only seem to roost at either Ham Wall or Shapwick Heath.
So, we decided to look through the roost sites on our site and map while also looking at photos and videos on our Facebook group. Below is our list of what we think are some of the best locations to visit across the country.
