Starling Website and Map Updated

28/1/2017

We are gradually going through the information sent to us by the submit info form on the website.
New locations have been added as well as older Starling roost locations being reactivated.

Something new with the map that we are going to gradually do is use the photographs posted on our Facebook groups, split them down in to their various locations and add them to the Gallery section of the website. Once there is a gallery that has photos of starlings added, then we will link that gallery to the location on the map. That way people who are not on Facebook but are visiting the map can see the amazing photos that we get to see in to group.
All photos used will have the original photographer credited.

This will be slowly completed throughout the summer while photo postings have slowed down and the website gallery should be a lot more complete!

Right, best get back to it.

Thanks again

Murmuration Madness

27/1/2017

Hello and Good Morning!

Firstly a HUGE thanks has to go to the BBC Springwatch team for linking our website, twitter and Facebook on their website during Winterwatch 2017.

Since Monday when the programme featured Starling Murmurations at Shell Bay in Dorset we have been inundated with huge amounts of new information about Starlings and their roost sites.

Twitter went crazy and we have a backlog of tweets to go through but thank you to those who contacted us.
We have also received quite a few new locations via the website 'submit information' tab and also via our email address too.
Our Facebook Group has seen an increase of nearly 500 members too which is awesome with new information coming from those members as well.

We hope to get on top of all this extra activity over the next couple of days and have everything up to date, including the Murmuration map.

Another idea has come to mind that once the Starling season is over, we shall rework the website and map with links from the Map locations. Each location will link to its own section within the website and will (Hopefully) feature photos and may be videos from that actual site and this will hopefully give people more of an idea of the size of the roost.

So, that is our summer sorted then!!

Again, HUGE thank you to you all for your information and input!!

Does the weather affect the Starling Roosting display?

3/11/2015

While we have been out watching Starlings coming in to roost, some people have asked questions like 'When Does The Show Start?'
This often leads to disappointment when the masses of Starlings do not come in a 'dance' through the skies but instead hug the tops of the reeds or bushes and go straight to roost.
This then leads to other questions, Why do they do this? Is it the Weather a factor?
We have actually witnessed quite a few 'murmurations' now and can say that these patterns in the sky do not really occur only when predators are there. It even happens when predators aren't there.
So we have decided to ask questions regarding the weather and starling murmurations.
Please use the Poll below to let us know what happens when you see Starling Murmurations this winter, letting us know WHEN you see the Starlings do their full on display and sky dancing.
Thank you, we look forward to your input. Please feel free to comment too.
